Overview

The Greener Homes for Redbridge project took 20 vacant older houses of various ages and condition across Redbridge and refurbished them to high sustainability levels.

A number of different specifications have been developed for these homes, aiming to refurbish them to improve their sustainability. The outcome was an up to 82% reduction in the carbon emissions of the properties.

The range of enhancements included solar panels and solar hot-water systems, energy efficient lighting and heating systems, and 'Smart' meters to enable residents to see how much energy they use. Innovative products included LED light bulbs.

Before work started various tests were carried out. Using this information we modelled carbon emissions, Standard Assessment Procedure, Energy Performance Certificate, and fuel bills. The development of this model was critical in helping the team work out the most effective use of the limited budget.

The properties will continue to be tested for up to two years to gather information on how well the energy and water efficiency measures are working.
