Pellings project scoops three design awards

Pellings, has won the overall 'Project of The Year' award for Goat Lees Primary School in Ashford, at the 2014 Kent Design & Development Awards. The awards celebrate design excellence in the county.

In a fantastic night for Pellings and KCC, as well as the School, Goat Lees Primary School won both of the awards it was shortlisted for, in the Public Buildings — Education and Environmental Performance categories, before being voted overall Project of the Year by the audience at the event.

Pellings acted as Architects on the new school which provides an inspirational learning environment for over 200 pupils in the area. Consultation with the school's senior management and teaching staff took place throughout the project, and the result was an exciting, innovative design that was highly praised by the panel of five awards judges.

The judges said that the Ashford school makes the most of natural light and ventilation, with intelligent use of space and strong links with the outside. The building, which is for community as well as educational use, also utilises photovoltaic and solar thermal panels, and a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structure to support its sculptural form.

Neill Werner, Head of Architecture at Pellings, said: "We are delighted the school has been recognised in this way. Goat Lees is an example of what can be achieved through understanding the value that senior management and teaching staff can bring to a school project. It is also an example of how exciting design can be delivered within a finite budget."

Alex Hicken of DHA Planning, sponsors of the Project of the Year award, commented: "All the winners are schemes Kent can be truly proud of. We were particularly pleased to see Goat Lees Primary School voted overall winner as it clearly stands out as an example of the high quality development being undertaken across the county."

Sarah Jones, a Senior Architect within Pellings' Education Team, can be seen accepting the award alongside Teresa Adams, head teacher at the school. The success follows two further awards successes for Goat Lees Primary School at the RICS Awards and LABC Awards ceremonies earlier in the year.
