Overview

Pellings were appointed by Neilcott Construction to provide architectural services in respect of the provision of a state of the art Learning Resources Centre.

The project involves an extension of the existing library building, and comprises three floors, two of which accommodate open plan study spaces, with an IT cafe area at ground floor, stretching the full length of the existing building.

Carefully considered links both physical and visual between the new and existing buildings have served to create a coherent and seamless facility.

Extensive refurbishment of ceilings, floor finishes, wall finishes and expansion of WC facilities within the existing block have ensured suitable accommodation for increased student numbers.

Structural glazing and a mix of transparent and pale grey opaque panels offer lightness to the building appearance in contrast with the existing brick library building to which it is annexed. Internal glazed partitions and choices of internal finishes draw natural daylight through the internal spaces.

The campus is located on a steeply sloping site. The landscaping scheme adjacent to the new extension has been designed to achieve wheelchair user access to/from the new extension and to/from the surrounding university buildings with the use of a 'ramped' pathway. The landscaping comprises simple graded lawns, wide external flights of steps and the discreet winding path that sweeps from the new extension to the higher buildings.
