Overview

Pellings were appointed by Surrey County Council as Architects and Contract Administrators to procure an extension to an existing special needs school within the Greenbelt, as part of their Partnering Framework Agreement.

Pellings also provided the services of Cost Consulting and Planning Supervision, with Mechanical and Electrical and Structural Engineering services provided via approved sub-consultants.

The new teaching block comprises dining and teaching facilities, together with social spaces for sixth form students, and replaces a series of dilapidated buildings, consolidating the campus footprint.

The building has been designed to achieve its own identity as a sixth form unit within the school campus. Sustainable materials have been employed, both at roof level where a green sedum finish has been used, and to the elevation where cedar planks and stock brickwork are used as cladding.

A masterplanning exercise of the whole campus sought to rationalise the disposition of buildings.

A passive ventilation system and brises soleil operate to moderate solar gain and achieve a comfortable environment internally, whilst ensuring good levels of natural light penetration.
