Overview

Pellings were appointed by London Borough of Greenwich to refurbish four libraries within the Borough and transform their interiors into modern and inviting environments.

In addition to West Greenwich Library the programme includes, Plumstead, Blackheath and New Eltham Library.

West Greenwich Library is a Grade II Listed Building in the heart of Greenwich.

The library has undergone an extensive refurbishment, including bespoke furniture and architectural design. The library has prime location on Greenwich High Road, and is ideally located close to the Maritime Museum and Observatory. The library will become a Community Information Hub, and an events venue for local groups and schools. The central dome will form the 'People's Space', an area for readings, family groups, exhibitions and music entertainment.

The use of colour throughout the space offers visual zoning of the distinct areas, with feature walls, coordinated soft furnishing alongside the main architectural elements of the space creates a modern and inspiring environment. Extensive consultation with the Conservation Specialist was necessary on this project and informed the design approach, it was essential that the scheme would complement and enhance the historical context of the building.
